GUNNISLAKE Football Club held a successful end of season presentation evening at Tavistock Golf Club. Secretary Michael Kinger opened by asking all to observe two minutes silence in memory of two young players who died in their twenties during the past few months — Tom Wakenshaw after a long illness, and James Hedges when travelling home after a match.
Chairman Pete Holmes thanked all those who had made a contribution to the club during the past 12 months including thanking the club's many sponsors and Nigel and Bridget Doidge who organised the event. Last season's managers Andy Brown (first team) and Mark Southcott (reserve team) presented the individual awards. Harry Southcott received the players' player and leading scorer trophies for the first team with Matt Avery receiving the manager's player trophy. Glenn Tremblett made it a clean sweep regards the reserve team trophies receiving both the manager's player and players' player trophies together with the leading scorer award.
The young player trophy went to Jamie Rowlands with Wayne Stephens, who will be emigrating to Australia in a couple of months, being awarded the Club Person trophy to mark his many years of committed play for the club.
The past season again proved a challenging one for both the club's teams. Each side has now been in the lower part of there respective league for three seasons having previously been at the opposite end of the tables and enjoying league and cup successes for the most part of the previous decade. The first team were relegated to Duchy league division two but the reserves did retain their Duchy four status finishing just above the relegation zone.
The club is expecting to go down to one team next season. First team manager Andy Brown is stepping down due to work commitments and the club have lost players in recent months. This team will play in Duchy league two. Mark Southcott will continue as manager and will run the one side. Being able to concentrate on fielding just one team the club is optimistic of having a much better season during the coming campaign. Off the pitch the club continues to be in a healthy state with a strong committee who have called the annual to be held on Monday, July 8 at 7.30pm in the Buccaneer Inn, Gunnislake.
Training is to be on Wednesday evenings at Gunnislake playing field from 6.30pm from on July 3. New players are always welcome and can simply turn up at a session or contact committee member Mark for details on 01822 834794 or 07538101207. Friendly fixtures will be starting from July 20.
