THE rain stopped, the sky lightened and play began at the finals day Tavistock Tennis Club.
In the ladies’ singles the defending champion Hilary Picton drew on all her match playing experience against the pretender to the title, Frances Lindsay; it was a keenly contested match with Frances winning the day 6-4, 6-1.
The ladies’ doubles was won by Hilary Picton and Jenny Read, who snatched victory from the jaws of defeat 0-6, 7-6, 6-1 against the powerful combination of Ruth Newman and Frances Lindsay.
This was a close match as was indeed the mixed doubles with Matt Smith and Lucy Hillman just losing out to Richard Read and Frances Lindsay 6-3, 7-6.
The men’s singles was played between Peter Bradley and Matt Smith; Peter did not put a foot wrong and prevailed 6-0, 6-1
In the men’s doubles Peter Bradley and Richard Read beat Matt Smith and John Stuart in a good game, 6-4, 6-2 .
It was a close run thing in the juniors between Callum, Joe and Myles in the boy’s tournament with Myles Pinckney coming out the victor.
In the younger age group Joe and Issy had a great battle before Joe won the day with some fine play. Issy Hillman is the girl’s champion.
The club thanked all those who attended and especially Matt Smith for organising the event.
