WEST Devon golfers have raised almost £6,000 for Parkinson's disease charities after 32 teams of golfers played a round at Tavistock Golf Club. Teams took part from St Austell, Liskeard and Okehampton as well as Tavistock to support the fund raising. The day was organised by local couple Mark and Nic Hoar and Patrick Stewart. Both Mark and Patrick have Parkinson's disease but still play golf on a regular basis. They were supported on the day by Parkinson's UK regional manager Neil Smart, Parkinson's specialist nurse Sian Day and members of Tavistock Parkinson's Support Group. The event was sponsored by Spring House Residential Care Home, Peter Tavy, with various holes and on course competitions sponsored by local businesses. One of the players was former Scotland international footballer and Plymouth Argyle manager Paul Sturrock, who presented the prizes at the end of the day. Patrick said: 'Although both Mark and I have Parkinson's it does not stop us enjoying our golf. We have both had tremendous support from Parkinson's UK and we felt this was a great way of putting something back in.' Mark added: 'We had a fantastic day and we were really touched by the generosity of not only our players, but all the local business people who gave prizes or sponsored a hole on the course. 'Thank you to everyone who contributed and made the day so successful.' The money raised will be divided to assist with funding another local Parkinson's specialist nurse and helping the support group.
