WITH the Yelverton Golf Club course in excellent condition, and played on a perfect autumnal day, Phil Stephenson carded a score of 40 points to claim top spot and the Ben Yung Trophy.

This is an annual trophy competed for by the club’s Pounders as part of their October Stableford competition. Ben was a hugely popular member of the Pounders and the trophy was provided in his memory and former Pounders who are sadly no longer with us.

Results: 1, P Stephenson 40pts; 2, RG Callicott 38pts; 3, SA Legassick 37pts. There were 29 entrants of which three players scored twos.

With a break in the bad weather conditions yielding a sunny but breezy day Yelverton held its mid-week Stableford attracted 32 entrants. Results: 1, Simon Kingdon 40pts; 2, Steve Trott 39pts; 3, Neal Hollaway 38pts. There were six twos with Phil Millar scoring two of them.

The Yelverton veterans played their best two from three scores format this week with a field of 41 players. Results: 1, Dennis Voisin, David Miles and Jon Pearn 79pts; 2, David Jeremiah, John Soutar and Andy Young 78pts; 3, John Adams, Andy Hill and Phil Baker 78pts. The resilience of Yelverton’s golf course was in full evidence this week with the South West being ravaged by Storm Callum. The ladies held their monthly Stableford and Pat Gove trophy amongst heavy rain and strong winds. Not all the entrants managed to complete the full course but all showed strength of character for their endeavours.

One of those standing tall was Rosamund Kikidas who shot a superb score of 31pts to take the division one win. Winning division two was Ann Pritchard while Julia Tindall-Jones won division three. Julia scored the highest Stableford score for the competition and became this year’s proud holder of the Pat Gove trophy.

Results: Pat Gove trophy winner: Julia Tindall-Jones 34pts. Division one, 1, R Kikidas 31pts; 2, SA Hills 28pts; 3, S Gullick 27pts. Division two, 1, A Pritchard 32pts; 2, S Rumbold 30pts; 3, M Harnett 25pts. Division three, 1, J Tindall-Jones 34pts; 2, J Moir 29pts; 3, P Town 29pts.
