THE season at Tavistock Golf Club is now well under way. The popular Winter League, organised by club professional Glenn Richards, attracted 76 players each month.
The winners for 2016/17 were Adam Bridgewater and Nick Meir with 46 points and second, with 43 pts, Mike Sutcliffe and Richards Potts.
In the men’s Knape medal scoring was tight — first in division one, and winner of the medal, was David Axtell with a nett 70. Second in the division was Adam Bridgewater with nett 72, third Mark Taylor with nett 73 on count back from Jim Grant, Mike Sutcliffe, Martyn Moon and Tom Dodd.
First in division two was Mike Watkin nett 71, second Mike Burbidge nett 72 and third Jonathan Coe nett 74.
In the George Kitley Salver Nigel Roberts was first in division one with 40pts on countback from Chris Gawman, third Dave Turnbull 39pts. In division two Mike Watkin scored 37pts, second Jerry Bawden 36pts, third Brian Wright 35pts. Ray Barnes with 36pts was first in division three, second Andy Down 34pts and third Jason Allen 32pts on countback from Shaun Daymond. The winner of the Salver was Nigel Roberts.
In the ladies’ qualifying round for the Warren Crocus winners in the silver division with 37pts were Wendy George and Belinda McSherry. Barbara Porter and Jean Thomas were first in the bronze division with 41pts.
Both pairs will represent Tavistock in the finals at Warren Dawlish later in the year.
The Marilyn Allen Trophy for past lady captains was played in conjunction with the monthly medal. In division one first Kayleigh Cann with nett 78 on countback from Nicky Gawman, third Wendy George nett 80. First in division two was Marilyn Allen, donator of the Trophy and this year’s winner, with nett 74. Second in the division Janet Kiely nett 75 and third Sybil Cole nett 78.
Thirty eight men vets played for the Wally Hammond Trophy which was won by Graham Horton with 40pts; second Stephen Shipman 39pts and Dick Spackman with 36pts.
For the first time the lady veterans played for the Down the Hole Cup donated by Jill Hill for 36 handicappers. Marion Allen was the winner with 32pts and runner up Wendy Anglis with 28pts. The team winners with 76pts were Elaine Cooper, Myra Sussex and Wendy Anglis.
The Juniors have reached the quarter finals of the Basil Steer Trophy when they beat Staddon Heights 2 and 1.
In the Junior J Morris Cup the winner was Elise Williams (with a two under par round), second Luis Inacio and third Callum Watkin.
Juniors are also doing well in the club knockouts with Tom White in the final of the Hampshire Cup and Jamie Ninnis and Callum Watkin in the final of Sir Francis Drake Winter Foursomes. In their Easter Stableford Tom White was the winner with 37pts on countback from Callum White, third Harry Western 34pts on countback from Oliver Western.
A group of golfers who call themselves the Tavistock Incredibly Talented Sportsmen played their annual Championship on a particularly blustery but sunny day. John Rea emerged as this year’s champion with 34pts; runner up was Richard Crawford with 32 pts just edging out Bob Small on count back.
It was an enjoyable day played on a course in excellent condition.
