MARTHA Miles, from Bere Alston, who swims with Tavistock Swimming Club had a busy start to half term with an eight hour trip to the Yorkshire Modern Pentathlon Championships held at Bishop Burton College.

The event was held over two days and saw 62 competitors competing in ages from 11 to 19 years-old. Martha’s weekend began on the Saturday morning with the show jumping first on an unknown horse, followed by a laser shoot on outside range, combined with cross country 800m run, and then a 100m swim.

On Sunday, the 11 year-old finished the competition with 10 fencing fights, each one to the best of four hits. Martha, who also trains with Andy Reeve at St Leonard’s equestrian centre in Launceston. won the U13s event overall and also took the gold medals in the swim (100m freestyle) and the fence.
