Newton Abbot Spurs 4

Okehampton Argyle 1

THIS was a poor result for Argyle as Spurs claimed their first league win since August.

Things looked bleak even before kick-off as Argyle had to borrow a change kit from the opposition.

Worse still was that only 12 players had made themselves available for the game despite the fact that the Reserve team match had been postponed. As a result, the starting line-up was far weaker than the previous Saturday.

Spurs took the lead after only three minutes when a throw in was headed on across the Argyle goal and Shaun Bowden was left completely unmarked to fire home from 18 yards.

The home side increased their lead on 17 minutes when Steve Parry's in-swinging corner curled straight into the net.

Three minutes later, the game was all over as Adam Dyson made it 3 – 0 with a low left-footed drive. It could have been even worse just two minutes later when the hosts were awarded a penalty after a foul in the area, but Adam Dyson fired his spot kick straight at Craig Mulholland in the Argyle goal.

Argyle took heart from this and began to put a bit of pressure on the home defence and on 25 minutes, Matt Mortimer reduced the arrears with a tremendous 40 yard shot giving the Spurs keeper no chance. Argyle then looked like they might get back into the game and were the better side in the last 15 minutes before the interval.

After the break, Okehampton looked dangerous to begin with, but any hopes of a come-back were thwarted on the hour mark when Mark Dyson finished off a good passing move.

Spurs dominated the remainder of the half and only poor finishing prevented them adding further goals. This was a day best forgotten for Argyle and only Matt Mortimer in defence and Gary Hird up front came out of the match with any great credit.
