OKEHAMPTON Argyle 1st XI manager Richard Washburn “has made the decision to step down from his role” in the wake of their defeat to Axminster Town.
Last season, Axminster brought up the rear in the South West Peninsula League Premier East but accepted the opportunity to remain at step six.
They were previously rooted to the foot of the table this year as well but back to back wins, the first coming away at Argyle, have signalled an uptick in their fortunes.
The Tigers defeat Okehampton by four goals to one at Simmons Park on Saturday, October 3, which saw the two teams swap places in the standings.
Argyle’s issues both on and off of the field over the last few years are no secret and they certainly aren’t the side they once were.
Washburn brought a renewed energy in 2024/25 and there was reason for optimism with the former Barnstaple Town man at the helm but a shifting club hierarchy and the loss of several key players to clubs in the surrounding areas held him back to no end.
They have had to turn to a plethora of players in their youth and reserve teams just to fulfil fixtures at time and even one occasion, against Ilminster Town at the end of August, they were dealt a point deduction due to forfeiting the game.
In the club’s statement, released on Friday, October 9, Argyle chairman Chris Wills wrote as follows.
“Both personally and on behalf of the club, I would like to express our sincere thanks to Richard for his tremendous efforts over the past 18 months, during what has been a challenging period for the club both on and off the pitch.
“Following Richard’s departure, assistant manager Jamie Hawker and coach Paul Daley have stepped up to take on the roles of first-team manager and assistant manager respectively.
“We wish Richard all the very best for the future and thank him once again for his commitment and dedication to the club.”
That duo’s first game in charge was a 6-1 home defeat against Stoke Gabriel & Torbay Police (Sat 10), who have also experienced a recent change in management.
