RNEC Cup

Tavistock 64

TAVISTOCK RFC booked their place in the RNEC Cup with an emphatic victory over Devonport High School Old Boys on the 4G surface at Keyham.

Giving first XV debuts to a number of colts mixed with both regular first and second XV players, Tavistock played some free flowing heads up rugby!

The first 10 minutes was a tight affair with the Plymouth outfit defending well until an infringement led to the Moorlanders kicking for the corner and colt Jasper Cameron going over from the resulting maul. Jack Easton converting his first of many in a fine kicking display.

From this Tavistock became quite dominant with one way traffic resulting in tries from Friend, Budden, Cann and Easton himself. The old boys did strike back before the half with a fine try from close range.

The second half was almost a mirror of the first with tries coming in regular intervals. Budden doubled his tally before a penalty from the restart was utilised quickly and Friend completed his brace. Perhaps try of the match goes to Tavistock colt Ed Nettleship who spotted space in behind the defence which Easton kicked into from the base of the ruck, Nettleship’s pace was too much for his opposite number as he collected to score in the corner.

The Old Boys were rewarded for their resilience with a try on the stroke of full time.

Lanner 41

Tavistock 14

THE visitors’ away form continued to be a non starter when they went down to a fine second half performance from St Day outfit Lanner. Tavistock had previously been unbeaten against Lanner but four second half tries downed the West Devon side.

The game started with Tavistock doing all the defending but to great success for the opening 15 minute period, not before losing Kerswill and Easton to injuries on seven minutes and 13 minutes respectively.

The deadlock was broken on 17 minutes when a missed tackle in midfield saw Lanner cross for a seven pointer.

Tavistock struck back almost instantly when spilt ball was hacked through by the returning Craddock to Scirebunder who went under the sticks. Webber levelling with the boot.

In almost identical fashion Lanner regained the lead with a simple try from 25 metres but a well constructed maul from the Moorlanders was converted by a strong finish from Richard Cann in his last game of the season.

The second half was one to forget for the visitors as six games in 14 days took its toll in what was a very tired performance. Easton did shake off his niggle to return and link well with Lamerton and Milligan in attack but to no avail as Tavistock struggled to cross the whitewash.

• This Saturday Tavistock welcome second place Penryn to Sandy Park. The following Wednesday, April 25 the Moorlanders are home to Saltash, kick-off 7pm.Pictures by Chris Hair.
