THIS weekend a small team of Tavistock Athletic Club juniors travelled to Cardiff for day two of the South West Indoor Athletics Championships.

For some of the athletes this was their first indoor event and gave them the chance to experience the challenge of competition; a good preparation for the coming track and field season. Following the successes enjoyed by the club on day 1 of competition in December, Nicolas Maczugowski, who had previously claimed two junior titles winning gold in the 200m and shot put and silver in the high Jump, followed this up with another commendable performance. He brought home a further three bronze medals in the 60m, 800m and the long jump.

Christian Malcom, who represented both Wales and GB and was voted as BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year joint coach of the year for the GB 4 x 100m world gold medalists, attended the event and took the time to talk with many of the athletes about their events and achievements — a great inspiration for those juniors!
