Devon and Exeter three

Chagford 1

University of Exeter fourths 1

FOLLOWING a minute’s silence in respect of the lost Chagford stalwarts — club president David Watson and long-term supporter Douglas Thorn — both teams set to work providing a good afternoon’s entertainment.

The students enjoyed the best exchanges of the first half, playing a fast, flowing and accurate passing game. The only thing missing was the ability to finish when in on goal. Chagford were well contained when moving forward and seemed to lack the pace of their mostly younger counterparts. When either side did get through, they found both ‘keepers on form; Norman making one vital save for Chagford, Miller quick to react accordingly at the other end.

Chagford played their way back into the match during the second half and were the more creative team.

The visitors dug deep and restricted Chagford to the minimum of chances. Just as the clock ran down and a draw might be a fair result, Andrew Davis was tripped in the student’s penalty area and a spot-kick awarded. Davis picked himself up to drive his shot through the smallest of gaps, between the post and Miller’s right hand. Any joy for the Moormen was soon dispelled however as University swept up to the other end and Max Foster fired in an unstoppable equaliser. This lifted the visitors and Chagford had then to endure a seemingly endless amount of stoppage time.
