DESPITE the adverse weather conditions, both teams played some excellent football and the result was not settled until the last kick of the match.
Chagford swept into a two minute lead as Liam O’Connell found himself sent clear, to slot the ball past the visiting ‘keeper.
The game then settled into a war against the elements and between the teams.
Chagford played well, especially when going forward, Barkwill, Penberthy and Dan Butler forming a noteworthy partnership. It was the latter who doubled the hosts’ lead when he collected a poor throw out by Sunner and netted comfortably on 26 minutes.
Early in the second half, Brett scored the first of his two goals and reduced the deficit. this sparked life into Lympstone and Chagford found themselves under pressure. Limited to an few counter attacks, they could have done better in their finishing.
A stunning free-kick from Cowell gave Lympstone their equaliser and things might have looked a little rocky for the hosts. This team had other ideas though and Adam Roddy fired in their third, four minutes later. Brett then scored, six minutes from time and a draw seemed to be the likely outcome. However, Butler came up with Chagford’s fourth on the stroke of normal time and, for the seven minutes stoppage time, it was all hands to the pumps. A final goal-line scramble saw two clearances from the line and Knight somehow clawing the ball to safety immediately before the final whistle.
