CONSERVATIVE A were taken right to the wire in the Tavistock Snooker League by West Devon C as they had to show some bottle to come from 2-0 down to steal it in a black ball final frame.
Pinkney for West Devon smothered the life out of the Con A's Carruthers in an hour long, dour safety battle, which was only settled when Pinkney cut in an awkward 'black ball' left to him by a less than well executed safety shot.
Worse was to come for Con A when Evans was stunned by some flamboyant potting from Hart as he built up a sizable lead in the early stages of the frame. Evans did get it together enough to haul it back to a 'pink ball game' but an unforced error let Hart in to secure a well deserved victory.
Con A's recovery started with a comfortable win for Cook who quite simply out potted Elliott with some exceptional attacking play. Cook was backed up by 'super sub' Folley, had the unenviable task of trying to tame the 'rock solid' Hodge. A couple of early opportunities went begging for Hodge but from there on it was all Folley as he capitalised with steady potting and assured safety to build a commanding lead that Hodge was unable to pull back.
The deciding frame was a tale of Con's Babb playing 'catch up' to some flair potting from West Devon's Shrimpton. In the end though it was Babb doing what he does best, winning, as he eventually took the deciding 'black ball' after both players had a couple of reasonably easy chances prior to that.
Despite initially getting off to a flying start with Hall taking the first frame from Hooper in commanding fashion, followed by Fitzsimmons with a similar destruction job on Decieco, Conservative Z looked on track for a pleasant evening. Sadly for the Con Z's West Devon D were there to spoil the party.
Hackney struggled against a particularly on form Murton who notched up a creditable 76 points. Paul Shrimpton did what he's done so well this season, turned it on when it was needed most. Mayors for Con Z, despite a valiant effort, was left stranded by Shrimpton's command of the table. All square and all to play for.
Shoulders for West Devon faced Symons in the final frame. Shoulders hardly put a foot wrong leaving Symons on the sidelines looking slightly bemused by the whole experience. A deserved win for the West Devon team.
