Heather Fell, Olympic modern pentathlete silver medalist, writes about her life 'on and off' the track.
Who said the UK doesn't get a summer — or have I just timed my trips perfectly so that whenever I have been back in the country the sun has been shining?
This weekend just gone has been no exception and quite thankfully too as I spent it working outdoors for the Blue mile event in Plymouth. This WWF conservation charity event held at Commercial Wharf was open to anybody and participants could choose to swim, stand up paddleboard or kayak a mile in Plymouth Sound. Usually I would be quite happy to sit back and watch something like this but it was so glorious I was almost tempted to jump into the dark waters of the harbour myself, however I was on commentary duty. My voice has certainly had more exercise than the rest of my body this summer but it doesn't seem to be adapting to my training and I was only just hanging on to it by the end of Sunday.
There was another factor thrown in that might have contributed to the fatigue of my vocal cords, I attended a friends wedding on the Saturday night. The wedding was for a local girl, a friend from Tavistock swimming club, but unfortunately the wedding itself was not so local. I managed to make it to the evening part in Bath and it was definitely worth the crazy journey and lack of sleep. There were a few hurdles added to my trip including a puncture and the challenge of entering my flat. I had a friend staying who had mistakenly locked me out, so after many phone calls and trip around the city before a speedy change I made it in time.
Arriving back home in Devon in the early hours of the morning I was met with another challenge, this time I had been locked out by my parents.
