AN UNUSUAL sporting combination took place at Meadowlands Leisure Centre in the swimming pool this month when a group of enthusiasts ‘dived’ in for a game of ‘aqua badminton’.

In what could be a first in the country the ’aqua badminton came about when the leisure centre and Tavyside Badminton worked together to give people of all ages new and different activities to participate in.

The idea for the aqua-badminton idea came out of a meeting of how Tavyside Badminton might run seated or minimal movement badminton sessions in the new development at the centre.

At a meeting between the two organisations Meadowlands general manager Lauren Parker asked ‘Can you play badminton in a swimming pool?’ so Tavyside Badminton chairman, Celine Conley decided to take on the challenge and develop it.

Lauren told Times Sport: ‘An aqua-badminton session consisted of skill work where individuals developed their racket skills and movements in the pool and this was followed by being challenged to throw and catch giant shuttles and play badminton rallies over a net strung across the pool.

‘The pool is only 1.3 metres deep so everyone can stand up and join in. We were looking to help those with Parkinson’s and other such illnesses and participate to help increase their fitness. It’s also good for hand-eye co-ordination and other benefits. The great thing about aqua-badminton is that it is something for all age groups to enjoy.

‘On the day there were around 15 people taking part and all agreed it was great fun. In fact, the session was so successful we have decided to hold a six week pilot in January and see if it takes off.

‘We checked on the internet and can’t find anything similar. We also contacted Badminton England who were excited to hear about the new venture in Tavistock and are hopeful that other pools may take on the sport and maybe even start a league.’
