NEXT month more than 1,000 young sporting superstars are competing in the annual Devon Games – the county's very own youth Olympics!
Devon Games to Inspire 2013 brings together young people aged 8-16 from all over the county in a festival of culture and sport including hockey, netball, gymnastics, badminton, volleyball and table tennis competitions.
This year's event is being held on July 14 in Torquay. Competitors are currently being selected by a series of open trials across the county's local authority areas, including West Devon.
The West Devon squads are being organised and supported by the Okehampton Community Recreation Association (OCRA).
Jon Parkinson, leisure contract manager at West Devon Borough Council, said: 'The games are a great way for children in West Devon to experience the thrill of competing in an important sporting event. For some it will be the first time they've taken part in something like this and for others it will be another boost to their confidence.
'We'd love for Devon to provide some of country's next Olympics hopefuls in the future. Hopefully these games will inspire the next generation of sporting greats to reach for the stars.'
