FOLLOWING on from a lovely sunny afternoon’s running at the first cross country hosted by Tavistock Primary, Whitchurch Primary was not so fortunate.
When the schools started arriving at Whitchurch Down, Storm Jacob was still in evidence, with strong winds and hail showers but the children were made of stern stuff.
In the Year 3/4 girls’ race the individual winners were Holly Cole of Lewtrenchard in first place, followed by Penny Jones of Meavy and Clara Edwards from Horrabridge. In the boys Rory Summers of Whitchurch took the gold medal and his team mate, Jack MacKenzie the bronze. Joel Lake of Tavistock won silver.
The Year 3/4 race was a West Devon Championship event with the winning boys’ and girls’ teams being invited to take part in the School Games County Championships on March 17.
Whitchurch took the boys’ title with the team of Rory, Jack, Sheldon, Austin, Taylor and James. Meavy girls Penny, Freya, Lara, Chloe, Esme and Imogen came top in the girls’ race.
Horrabridge girls Clara, Isobel, Lily, Kitty, Esther and Millie took silver and Lara, Amelie, Emily, Lily and Ella of St Peter’s received bronze medals.
Dylan, Rowan C, Rowan P, Tobias, Wyatt and Charlie of Meavy were the second boys team home with the bronze medallists being Fynn, Finlay, Joshua, Robert, Raffi and Christopher from Milton Abbot.
Next was the year 5/6 girls’ race, with Krystina Cade (St Andrew’s), Izzy Page (Meavy) and Hannah Walker (St Peter’s) taking the first three places yet again.
In the boys’ race, Ewan Dix of St Peter’s moved up from his second place at Tavistock to win the race, with William White of Whitchurch second and Guy Allen of Horrabridge in third.
With one event to go at Princetown on March 16, the current team standings are: Large schools, 1, St Peter’s, 2,997 points; 2, Tavistock, 2,983pts; 3, St Andrew’s, 2,981pts and 4, Whitchurch. 2,967pts. Small schools, 1, Meavy, 2,911pts; 2, Gulworthy, 2,692pts; 3, Lady Modiford’s 2,289pts; 4, Milton Abbot, 1,798pts.
