Plymouth Civil Service and Roborough v

Whitchurch firsts

WHITCHURCH Way-farers travelled to Plymouth Civil Service and Roborough on Saturday as they looked to continue where they left off against Babbacombe the weekend before.

Wayfarer’s captain won the toss and elected to bat. Ben Hodge and Billy Barriball opened the batting for the away team and both looked comfortable.

Hodge was the first man to go, when he was caught at mid on off the bowling of Trevarrow. Smith came in at three but did not trouble the scorers as he went for a duck.

Charlie and Billy Barriball looked solid together and the crease and were scoring at a good rate. They put on 51 in quick time before Charlie picked out deep square leg and he went for 28 at just over a run a ball. Billy was still at the crease and was aiming for his fourth consecutive 50 but he went for 35 when he chipped Dan Winsor’s ball to cover and Whitchurch were in trouble at 81-4. The home side began to pick up wickets at regular intervals and bowled the Wayfarers out for just 130.

Whitchurch came out all guns blazing and picked up both openers early on with Charlie Barriball and Darren Sambells taking one wicket each.

Rob Gaylard and Dan Winsor settled any nerves that might have been going through the home sides dressing room at 11-2 as they batted superbly in a partnership worth 120. Rob Gaylard was unbeaten on 53 with Winsor unbeaten on 44.

The eight wicket victory means Civil Service and Roborough have gained ground on Whitchurch who need to start picking up points to make sure they are clear of the drop come September.
