NINE teams entered the Tavistock Area Primary Schools’ Cricket tournament, which is also the first round of the Dartmoor Cup, held at Whitchurch Wayfarers Cricket Club.

A shower of rain just before the start was worrying but the group stages were completed in dry, warm weather.

IN group one: Horrabridge, Whit-church and Mary Tavy and Brentor A; group two: St Andrew’s, St Peter’s and Mary Tavy and Brentor B; group 3, Tavistock, Milton Abbot and Gulworthy.

Mary Tavy and Brentor A emerged the winners of group one, beating Whitchurch by 20 runs and drawing with Horrabridge. Whitchurch beat Horrabridge to come second.

St Andrew’s won both their games in group two with St Peter’s second and Mary Tavy and Brentor B third.

Gulworthy beat Tavistock by 39 runs and Milton Abbot by 57 runs to take first spot in group three with Tavistock second and Milton Abbot third.

The teams were then divided into three different groups in preparation for the finals of the West Devon Dartmoor Cup Championships which were taking place the following week — the cup teams — St Andrew’s, Mary Tavy and Brentor A and Gulworthy; the shield teams Tavistock, Whitchurch and St Peter’s; the trophy teams, Milton Abbot, Mary Tavy and Brentor B and Horrabridge.

Afternoon play did start to decide the actual placings of the nine teams but the rain started to fall heavily and the cricket had to be abandoned.

It was decided to declare the three top teams as equal winners and all present were invited to take part in the finals of the Dartmoor Cup/Shield/Trophy.
