Cotehele Quay Gig Club attended the hectic but well run Caradon Gig Club Mixed and Veterans Championships event at the weekend. Lovely sunny weather and calm river conditions ensured the crews had an enjoyable weekend. On Saturday the mixed crews raced and Cotehele entered three crews and a junior one. The juniors came a respectable fifth and one of our senior mixed crews made it through to the plate final. On Sunday it was the veterans and supervets races in which the club entered a mens and a ladies crew. It was quite tough rowing in such hot conditions but the ladies crew made it through to the semi-final. Only the top two made it to the final and although Cotehele GC did not make it they were pleased with the way they rowed. Club spokesperson Rita Hoile said,: 'I think we were secretly rather relieved that we didn't have to race again in the final because it was very hard work in the heat!' The club is now looking forward to hosting its own Tamar Challenge on August 9, which is a nine-mile handicapped race from Saltash to Cotehele Quay. Cotehele Quay GC competed in the CPGA tribute event held at Pentewan Sand in Cornwall and hosted by Mevagissey Gig Club earlier this month. Cotehele Quay A and B crews participated plus junior crews on the Sunday. The competition was a test of different skills with a long race on the Saturday morning challenging the stamina of crews. The race took around 30 minutes and was a long kite course with three buoy turns. In the afternoon crews had to sprint a distance of 800 metres, three times in succession. This entailed rowing at full pressure with limited recovery time. On Sunday a shorter kite course was the challenge. The juniors raced two sprints on the Sunday morning followed by a kite course in the afternoon. The Cotehele crews were pleased with their efforts. All crews had respectable placings. Special mention to the Under 16s crew who rowed superbly and showed real determination. They were: Jack French, Fergus Gallacher, Rowan Newbitt, Joe and Harry Duddridge and Rhys Chaney. Also well done to the men's A crew who rowed the last race with a broken oar and still came third in their heat!

Cotehele Quay Club rowers at Caradon championships: Joe Oddie (cox), Di Rogers, Mark Duddridge, Sheila Snellgrove, Steve Arthur, Sarah French, Jane Fitzsimons, John Flockton, Rita Hoile, Alex Folkes, Dave Egerton, Karen Gallacher and Steve Harvey.
