CONSERVATIVE Z put a slight dent in West Devon A team’s aspirations with a 3-2 victory in the Tavistock Snooker League.

Hodge for Conservative Z beat Lawrence in a tightly contested match — despite Lawrence’s best efforts to overwhelm the safety play and cutting edge of Hodge. Jankowski for Con Z started poorly and was soon behind to a formidable Morris; however, he gradually clawed back the deficit and went on to build up a fairly substantial lead to gain a vital point for his team.  A much improved newcomer this season Flack (junior) took command from the start against veteran Taylor for West Devon A. Flack was ‘on fire’ and despite his best efforts Taylor failed to contain his rampant opponent.

Heathman the West Devon A captain was watching his team in melt down and realised something special was needed and he produced it against the normally reliable Mayors who had little response to Heathman’s devastating onslaught and was totally unprepared for the aggressive style of play.

Short straw this week was drawn by Con Z’s Hall who faced Rich, the top ranked player in the league, who yet again showed why with a decent total of 70 points in a game where Hall was all but a spectator. A decent and deserved win by Con Z team nonetheless.

Golf A bounced back from last week’s reversal with a ‘more like it’ performance against a struggling West Devon C. The first three frames, however, could have gone either way with small margins in each of them. Ruth, Bridgewater and Pope held in there to put Golf 3-0 up.

The last couple of frames proved to be less of a challenge for Golf A with Turnbull scoring more heavily than Williams in his win, backed up by Whitley who as always entertained with a flamboyant display including a 23 break. So 5-0 put Golf Aback among the leading pack.

Conservative B enjoyed maximum five haul over Golf B. The first three frames could have gone either way, with brave efforts from Golf B’s Goble, Congo and Hough not quite enough to stop Lillicrap, Neale and Moloney from giving the Con B’s a 3-0 frame start. The icing on Con B’s cake was provided by McKechnie and Ewings as they took the last two frames at the expense of Treble and Young. After a slow start Con B now seem to be getting up a bit of a ‘head of steam’.
