AN ineffectual performance in the Tavistock Snooker League game from Symons of Conservative Z team let Conservative B’s Lillicrap get off to an ideal start.
Symons’ slow approach gave the B team just the boost required and Lillicrap took full advantage of his opponent’s weakness to put his team in the driving seat with a fine win against a bemused and jaded Symons.
Fortunately for Con Z Mayors called a halt to the B team’s short lived celebrations; facing the normally resilient Moloney, he pulled out all the stops in his own inimitable way leaving Moloney with little by way of response to the onslaught. Jankowski followed suit and left Con B team’s Craze gasping for breath in a distinctly one-sided frame edging his team into a slim but satisfying lead and picking up a decent 27 break on the way.
Hall for the Con team looked to carry the lead forward but underestimated his opponent McKechnie, who was in fine fettle and in no mood to give anything to Hall, who struggled throughout the game and never really came to terms with McKechnie’s quality.
Flack (junior) for Con Z team faced Ewings in the final deciding frame, and both players realising the importance of what lay ahead played with unusual trepidation, Flack eventually overcame his opponent despite not playing at his best and with Ewings doing his best to thwart Flack at every turn. This was a tough but interesting match for both teams.
The Tavy A team juggernaut cruised relentlessly on with a resounding 5-0 maximum at West Devon B.
Three 20 plus breaks for Anderson (senior) and a 24 for Anderson (junior) soon had Tavy two frames up. Backed up by wins from Evans, Dent and Hicks there was never any doubt about the result despite a spirited effort from West Devon’s Roger Rich and Bluett.
Conservative A got back to winning ways with a 4-1 over Conservative C.
Wiles (25) and Carruthers put Con A team two up in short time, only for Davies to get the edge over Evans to pull one back for Con C. Despite a feisty showing from Bellamy it was Con A team’s Bell that got back to winning ways to ‘nick’ the next frame in a close finish. Babb for the A team also found his winning touch again as he overcame the resilient Davey to make it four for Con A.
Golf A also continued their push towards the leading pack at the top of the table with another sound 4-1 win at West Devon D.
Ruth, Pope and Whitley (25) met with little opposition to take Golf A three frames up.
Shrimpton with a tasty 30 break halted Golf A’s proceedings temporarily with a nice win for WD A. Turnbull got things back on track for Golf with a comfortable win over Murton.
Golf B produced their best performance of the season by taking two frames for the first time against fellow strugglers West Devon C. A bright start from WD C saw Boyd and Grigg give their team a two frame cushion.
Then a spell of solid resistance from Golf B saw in form Appleton, backed up by a good outing from Goble, bringing their team level with all to play for. Unfortunately for Golf B, Shrimpton (senior) for WD C proved too strong for Hough and the result went the way of West Devon C.
Nevertheless this was a much better showing from Golf B who will undoubtedly take encouragement from it.
