THIRD place team in the Tavistock Snooker League, Conservative A came from two frames down to take out West Devon A in a tight affair.
West Devon ‘big guns’ Rich and Brookes had their team two frames up but not without scares as Con A’s Bell and Babb provided some nervous moments for the league leaders. Carruthers reduced the arrears for the Con A as he eventually overcame the tenacious Morris, followed by Evans drawing his team level with a nervy black ball win over the feisty Lawrence.
The winning frame for Conservative A came from a solid showing from Wiles with his 36 break providing the deciding factor against Heathman.
Conservative Z displayed fortitude and tenacity against West Devon B. Jankowski for Con Z got back to his winning ways against Rich (junior) after a poor season to take full advantage of Rich’s hesitant approach getting his team off to an ideal start. Likewise, Hall for Con Z’s after a faltering start this season, played sublimely against Bluett and left him trailing in his wake. It took Hoar for the West Devon B to save his team’s blushes in a controlled and measured game against Hackney, who could only watch on from the side lines while Hoar proceeded to notch up the points including a 21 break.
Mayors for Con Z’s continued his winning streak leaving Rich (senior) bemused and deflated in a one sided game. Gilchrist for WD B also had little response to an in-form Hodge. This was a well-deserved four points for Conservative Z.
The last of the Golf Club’s local derby’s saw a solid 4-1 win for Golf A.
Golf B however were the quickest out of the blocks with a convincing win for Goble over the A team’s skipper Pope.
From there on, despite a couple of close frames, it was all all Golf A with Ruth, Bruty, Turnbull and Whitley doing the business to secure a decent win for their team.
Conservative C and Conservative B battled it out in their penultimate game of the season with the B team shading the C team in a 3-2 win.
Moloney got the B team’s noses in front only for Davies to respond for the C team to draw level. The next two frames secured the win for the B team with Rob Lillicrap and Neale getting the better of Jago and Cleave, a good 20 break for Lillicrap the icing on the cake.
The final frame saw Basset for the C team reduce the arrears with a comfortable win over Alan Lillicrap, a second 20 break of the evening also going to Bassett.
The previous week if ‘high flying’ Tavy A thought their meeting with out of form West Devon D in the Tavistock Snooker League was going to be a formality, they were in for a shock.
Going two frames down was most definitely not in Tavy A’s script, but that is just what transpired.
West Devon D’s Clive Peters with his first ever league win, and Simon Ward, produced composed performances to take two black ball frames for WD D and give them a shock two frame lead.
Hicks reduced the arrears for Tavy A with a comfortable win, followed by Evans clearing most of the colours to come back from the brink to steal another black ball frame from the unlucky Neil Murton.
Dean Anderson then completed the comeback for Tavy A with victory over Paul Shrimpton.
West Devon D will feel that they missed out on the chance of a real ‘upset’ here, whilst Tavy A missed a golden opportunity to catch leaders West Devon A.
