THIS being the last game of the season in the Tavistock Snooker League it was crunch time for the Conservative A team, who required at least three points from their game against Conservative Z to retain top spot.

It was a nervy start from Con A, with Jankowski in the driving seat for Con Z against his old sparring partner Cook, who needed the black to secure the game. A tight frame with Cook doing just enough to win it 45-41. Steve Hall in fine fettle for the Z's took Steve Lacey to another black ball game, Lacy eventually potting the black, easing the jangled nerves of Con A. Tommy Evans was paired with Symons in yet another close match, but Evans eventually stormed to a big finale to take the frame. Con A team were virtually over the finishing line when McKechnie for Con Z hardly got a look in with the momentum gained as Babb took the table by storm and played to the crowd in a well deserved 66-16 win.

Spirits were high in the Con A camp and Carruthers put the icing on the cake with a convincing win against Flack, with a 24 break thrown in for good measure, notching up a creditable 85. Despite a shaky start, the A team held their nerve and held on to their title.

The maths was simple for West Devon A, to catch Con A, they had to take two frames more in their game than the Con's did in theirs, against third in the table Conservative B.

A nervy Colin Heathman kept West Devon A's hopes alive with a black ball thriller over Nick Monk in the first frame. Next though it looked like a miracle would be needed for West Devon as stand in Rob Heathman fell to Dolan in a tight frame.

By now the news from 'across the square' was filtering in that Con A had gone 3-0 up in their game and it was all over bar the shouting. Not to be deterred though West Devon A's Tim Taylor went about dismantling the Con B's Ewings, with Kevin Rich also storming to an easy win with the league's highest break of 46. Keith Morris did his bit at the end to make it 4-0 for the West Devon with a well worked win over the Con B's McKechnie. News was now confirmed that it was not enough as Con A had thumped Con Z 5-0 and the title remained in the Conservative A's hands. The valiant late run from West Devon A was just not quite enough, but heads could be held high.
