TAMAR and Tavy Gig Club have acquired their second training boat and on a beautiful summer’s evening named her Birlanda.
The club has been fortunate to buy another boat with the generous help of two local trusts.
The Belinda O’Flynn Trust have been a long time supporter of the club and donated money towards this new boat.
The boat naming ceremony on Friday evening and was conducted by the Reverend Nick Shutt.
A huge thank you was given to one of the club members who is involved with the Second Junior Charitable Trust which gave a substantial donation towards the new gig.
Following the naming of the new boat, the club took to the water with all four of their boats making quite a spectacle on the river.
The junior section were there in force on the evening and certificates were given to some juniors who have improved their rowing skills over the past months.
The whole membership were given the chance to name the boat. Birlanda was chosen which is Anglo-Saxon in origin describing the Bere Peninsula.
Club captain Lynn Renton said: ‘It has been a great evening with members enjoying a glass of champagne to celebrate the new boat. We are so lucky to be supported by these local charities.
‘We have two plastic boats so the club can offer more training and social rowing sessions throughout the winter giving more opportunity for members to get out on the water.’
