ON Sunday Bere Alston Trekkers (BATs) travelled north, east and west to take part in events.
Jim Medhurst went east to Exeter for the First Chance 10k, which with two flat laps of a route alongside the canal – half tarmac and half unsealed path is well known for its fast times and personal best potential. Unfortunately, due to works alongside the canal, a slightly modified route had to be run which could not be officially measured. Jim recorded a time of 49 minutes 1 second, one second off the target that he had set himself before the event.
Northern BAT Andy Cowden ran in the Helsby Four Villages Half Marathon near Ellesmere Port in Cheshire. An undulating course through pleasant Cheshire countryside saw 2,000 runners and riders sprint, run, and trundle along closed roads. Andy was on pacing duty helping a friend achieve a PB in a time of 2 hrs 12 minutes 22 seconds.
Hilary and Martin Head travelled west to Camborne for Storm Force 10, a ten-mile race run on open roads, starting in Penponds and finishing at Camborne Science and International Academy. The event was first run in 1998 and is the first race in the Cornish Grand Prix Road Racing Series. Martin finished in a time of 1.20.57 and Hilary 1.57.02, both achieving distance PBs.
