ON Saturday, July 6 in fantastic conditions the Jim Butcher Medal competition was played at Okehampton Golf Club.
There was a battle for first place in division one but the winner with a nett score of 64 was Will Searle. The next three players all achieved a net 65. After countback second place was awarded to Simon Taylor, third was Andrew Parry and in fourth was Johnny Rattenbury.
The winner of division two and The Jim Butcher Medal was Graham Pengelly with a net score of 61points. In third with a net 64 was Colin Beardwell. Division three was won by Robert Reddington with a net 66. Sid Sanders was second with a net 67 and in third with a net score of 70 was Tony Fisher.
A successful few weeks of golf by the ladies' section of Okehampton Golf Club has produced some spectacular results. A small field of ladies played the July Stableford on July 3. The winner in the silver division was Pam Jarman with 31 pts. The bronze division winner was Lynda Walker with 35 pts, second was Janice Thwaites with 34 pts and third was Lorna McCurrach with 33 pts.
The Sheelah Creasy team played their final match at Woodbury on July 1. In order to win their division they needed two and a half matches out of seven over Woodbury. Janice Thwaites won her match followed by Sue Williams, Maureen Willcocks and lady captain Jane Warren bringing in the halves which meant success and the team through to the quarter finals to be held in August at Teign Valley.
The president's team also won enough matches at Tavistock to qualify for the quarter finals at Staddon Heights in August.
Lin Atkinson and Marcia Guy have qualified for the Willes Little final to be held at Sidmouth at the end of July after an excellent win at Wrangaton against Bigbury.
Abby Turner played for the Devon county first team in the inter-county matches at Woodbury and then went on to the England Golf Grand Medal final at Northamptonshire County Golf Club where she had the second best gross score and came third overall.
