LAST week a number of Bere Alston Trekkers hung up their trainers in favour of shoes to attend the clubs first Grand Prix dinner. The grand prix, which is purely for fun, was set up to encourage members to participate in more races thus improving their overall standard. The grand prix has been a great success to get together all those wanting to do races.
Bats have had such a great turn out at events with fabulous support from the faster runners cheering in the whole team. Supporters and marshals also gave up their time to cheer the Bats on. Each year the series will have an agreed number of events with the minimum number of events being four.
Awards for 2012 were presented: Bronze four races: Mike Smith, Martin Head, Phil King, Samantha Marshall, Laurence Sargeant, Julie Brownlie, Ben Neale and Hilary Head; silver eight races: Rachel Wood, Nathan Newton, Mike Chipperfield, Heather Smith and Dave Adams; gold 12 races: Julian Setterington, Pam Adams, Dotty King (who also ran the most number of miles (1,500 in 2012) and Paul Mingo. Paul ran 21 races with his Bats vest which is a gold and silver combined and was awarded the new 'Paul Mingo' trophy.
