Devon D Whitchurch v Filleigh BILLY Barriball scored a magnificent, unbeaten 110 to lead Whitchurch to a fine win over Filleigh. In an exciting game where both teams had the opportunity to win it was Billy's composure under pressure and excellent shot selection that turned out to be the difference. Put into bat Filleigh were soon in deep trouble. Kerswill (2-35) and Billy Barriball (2-54) had Filleigh on the back foot at 28-4 off the first 8. Harrison-Hooton (59) was watchful at the other end as he saw the rest of the top order depart. Playing mostly defensively he let loose with some glorious shots hoping that someone would stay with him. He was joined by Prideaux (40) who provided the perfect foil as the two put on 59 helped by some wayward bowling. At the half way point Filleigh were 123-5 and both sides were probably hopeful of gaining the upper hand. Returning Steve Bray showed how to bowl with a tight spell conceding only 20 runs in nine overs. He was unlucky not to take wickets while at the other end Charlie Barriball picked up four. The rest of the bowling leaked runs and Filleigh looked to have regained the advantage as they closed on 224 all out at the end of their 45 overs — Whitchurch giving away 45 in extras. In reply Whitchurch lost early wickets as Mbofana (1-12) and Hickman (1-5) both bowled very well early on. Three consecutive maidens from Hickman really put the pressure on the batsmen and they were restricted to 67-3 after 20 overs. Realising that the run rate was creeping up Filleigh moved players to the boundary. Bone (15) and Billy Barriball started to make intelligent use of the spaces that appeared. Easy singles were taken and ones were made into twos as the fielding side came under pressure. The partnership of 61 between Bone and Barriball set the tone; although 100 runs were still needed when Bone was caught after mistiming a shot there were still 17 overs left and Barriball was well set. Ben Powell joined Barriball and the pair added to the pressure that had been building. Without taking any risks they took the singles that were available and whenever the bowling offered the opportunity hit the boundaries. Although Filleigh rotated their bowlers they were unable to stem the flow of runs. Billy Barriball reached his ton with a single neatly sandwiched between two glorious sixes. It was a superb win cementing Whitchurch's position in the league.
