YELVERTON Tennis Club players, members and supporters gathered together earlier this month for the finals of its annual Autumn Tournament.

Some hard-fought and very close matches were enjoyed, seeing last year's reigning men's singles champion, Andy Weymouth, defeated by some superb tennis played by 15 year old Tom Chiappe. The reigning ladies' singles champion, Fiona Murphy, was finally overcome by the consistency and skill of Lynne McFarlane.  Fiona and Lynne then joined forces to become an unbeatable pairing in the ladies' doubles, defeating Angie Lynch and Fiona Spreadbury in a well fought contest.

The men's doubles saw Andy Weymouth and Terry Leonard defeat Phil Gasche and Chris Taylor to retain their last year's title. Andy and Terry were again in action in the mixed doubles, this time partnered by Wendy Sharland and Mags Berry respectively.  The first set was close but finally Andy and Wendy overcame their opponents, retaining their title in two sets.

At the presentations Vince Keep, chairman, welcomed Ray Every and son Dan to the event and thanked them for the beautiful cup that the family, including son Paul, had kindly donated in memory of Shirley.  Shirley Every had been a keen player and popular member of the club for many years, playing competitively in summer leagues and tournaments.

The cup was then presented by the family to the winners of the summer tournament, Andy Weymouth and Anne Shaw.

Club chairman Vince Keep thanked John Marshall, the tournament organiser, for all his hard work, before presenting the winners of the Autumn Tournament with trophies and cups. Vince thanked all the competitors, the many supporters who made the event so enjoyable before presenting the winners of the Autumn Tournament with trophies and cups.
