FORMER Tavistock Community College student Zoe Hogg is the top sportswoman in the Royal Navy.

Zoe, 18, received her award, ?Navy Sportswoman of the Year? aboard HMS Victory at Portsmouth, which was Admiral Nelson?s flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar.

She was presented with the award by Second Sea Lord and principal personnel officer for the Royal Navy and Marines Vice-Admiral Sir James Burnell-Nugent.

Zoe, from Bere Alston, joined up fewer than 18 months ago and has represented three women?s navy teams. Hockey, badminton and rugby are her forte but she also plays in the soccer, netball and volleyball teams at establishment level ? like Raleigh.

Not just a team player she has also won individual competitions at badminton and been nominated as player of the tournament in indoor hockey.

She won the award because of her sporting talent representing so many teams and her commitment and dedication to training, helping with the organisation and co-ordination of sport in general and more recently taking up refereeing football and rugby - even when on her initial training at Raleigh.

Zoe said: ?I?ve achieved so much in such a short time, it goes to show that the Navy is willing to back you just as they promise when you join up ? if you?re determined to get on.?

She is currently serving in the new Plymouth-based HMS Bulwark and her parents still live in Bere Alston.
