BANKS in Callington's Fore Street are being asked to join in the campaign to stop drivers parking on zig-zag and double yellow lines in the town.
The ongoing problems of people parking illegally in the town centre are frustrating town councillors and members of the public.
Drivers often park on the zig-zag lines outside the banks to use the cashpoint machines instead of using the designated parking bays or car park. Banks are to be asked if they will put signs up to remind people they will get three points on their licence if they are caught.
Resident Brian Riley told a town council meeting last week that cars were even obstructing shopkeepers getting to their premises.
Cllr Andrew Long said the most annoying thing for him was seeing an ex-policeman park on the zig-zag lines while he went to the newsagents.
Cllr Jeremy Gist said at the moment the traffic warden, or civic enforcement officer as they were now known, visited Callington for only one hour a week, but until the town got a representative on Cornwall Council to press the case for Callington, not much could be done to improve this.
There were a lot of tickets being issued when the civil enforcement officer was present and the police were doing what they could, he said.
The concerns strengthened the need for the proposed one-way system for Callington, said Cllr Long, which would give the town more parking bays:
'But at the same time we need to crackdown on the people who are parking illegally,' he said.
'Zig-zag lines are there for a reason, to protect children and other pedestrians.'
