FOUR Zest Triathletes travelled to 'Parc Bryn Bach' in the Welsh Valleys to compete in the Welsh Junior Triathlon.
This race attracted a very high standard of athletes as it was a qualifying event for both Wales and the South West of England with the top two girl and boy finishers in each age group going on to represent their area in a national final later in the year. The event also attracted triathletes from the Midlands, London and the South East so the competition was extremely tough.
Tristar two (ages 11 and 12) Emily Ackford and Jordan Channon for Zest donned their wetsuits for the 200 metre lake swim with Emily fifth girl out of the water with Jordan second of the boys.
Emily was still in fifth place after the 6km bike ride. The tarmac bike circuit was fast and challenging. Jordan had the fastest bike time out of the boys and going out of transition onto the 1.8km run he came first overall in a time of 23.26 minutes securing him a place in the British Triathlon South West Team.
Emily had a superb run having the fastest time of all the girls leapfrogging her into fourth place overall in a time of 25.37 minutes.
Hannah Greep and Will Carter competing in the Tristar three (age 13 and 14) group had to swim 300 meters in the lake. Will had an excellent swim followed by a fast 8km bike ride and 2.4km run around the lake to complete the three disciplines in a time of 31.47 minutes putting him into a respectable eighth place. Hannah showed determination and spirit throughout the race coming tenth in the girls race in a brilliant time of 37.37mins.
