credit union Plough and Share last week unveiled their campaign to 'Save Devon' with a visit from Okehampton and West Devon Borough councillor Michael Morse.

Cllr Morse and Eloise Hoskin, aged eleven months, were the first to sign up for the new campaign launched at Plough and Share's head office in Okehampton.

Credit unions such as Plough and Share let people with a common link save and borrow money.

They are owned and controlled by their members, so they have no outside shareholders to pay. Any profit that a credit union makes is used to develop the credit union and provide a return to savers.

The 'Save Devon —Strength in Numbers' campaign is asking people across the county to save their money but not with the big five banks.

Paula Anscomb, credit union manager with Plough and Share said: "We want to raise the profile of Plough and Share, Devon's credit union, and this member recruitment drive aims to encourage people to save and keep their money in Devon.

'Putting something away for a rainy day, no matter how much or how little, can make a real difference, and what better way than with a local organisation which values you as a member and not just as an account number.

'We want to help the whole of Devon to realise the many benefits of saving and hope everyone starts to Save Devon.'

Eloise's mother, Gemma Hoskin, said: 'I want my daughter to learn about saving, and want to save with Plough and Share, a Devon organisation, rather than a big bank.

'I will put her birthday and Christmas money in her account, and when she's older will encourage her to continue to do the same.

'I used to love dropping my pennies into my piggybank and counting it up before making a deposit into my account, and want to teach Eloise to do it as well.'
