A WORKSHOP discussing ideas for the regeneration of Tavistock and surrounding areas was held last week.

As part of the Market and Coastal Towns Initiative, a workshop session with about 70 invited guests, was held at Tavistock College, last Saturday.

The workshop followed on from the successful marquee event held in Bedford Square on Saturday, April 20, where post-it notes were used to collect ideas for improvements to the Tavistock area.

Cllr Gretta Madigan, who chaired the event, said the consultation process had gone very well. 'We looked at the vision for Tavistock in 20 years time,' said Cllr Madigan. Among the issues the workshop had identified were the importance of protecting the environment of the area, a need for affordable housing and public transport.

'We are trying to get community input into the action plan rather than someone in County Hall or Whitehall deciding what would be good for Tavistock. We want to know what people in Tavistock think would be good,' said Cllr Madigan.

'The next step is compiling all the different ideas the community has said it wants into an action plan, taking into account what people in the area say is important to them.

'Then we will be asking projects to come forward, and we can assess the need by referring to the community action plan,' she said.

Cllr Madigan said most people at the event felt Tavistock and the surrounding area was a good place to live.

The aim of the workshop was to highlight action to date in the Tamar Valley, Tavistock itself and by young people in the area and identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats for the area.

The workshop also aimed to discuss a vision for the area over the next 20 years, as well as looking at ways of reaching that vision.
