AN impressive haul of medals came out of Dawlish last Sunday, as 16 young Tavistock Athletic Club athletes competed in the Devon County Sportshall League.

It was the third Sportshall fixture of this winter's series and this meeting incorporated the County Championships with medals on offer for the first three in each event and the possibility of selection to represent Devon in the Regional Championships in the New Year.

Tavistock's newly formed high jump squad fielded five athletes and every one of them won a medal and personal best in this event. Jasmine Edwards and Jodie Stacey shared the top honour in the under 11 girls' category, George White took a silver in the under 11 boys' event and in the under 15 girls' competition, Tessa Young took gold with debutant Ali Guy picking up the bronze.

Emilie Porter took a bronze in the under 11 girl's chest push with team-mate Lily Mills combining strength and technique to win gold. In a very competitive under 10 girls' long jump competition, Natalia Ridgeway held off a determined Plymouth AC athlete to clinch the gold medal with some excellent jumping.

On the track there were some spirited performances too. Even though they did not finish in medal positions, Francesca Herdman in the under 10 girls' two laps, Ellie Gavin in the under 10 girls' one lap and Emily Attfield, who battled hard in the under 11 girls' four lap race, all did themselves proud with respectable placings.

Despite injury, under 11 boy Josh Porter proved he still has a strong throwing arm with a very creditable performance in the javelin and one of the youngest competitors from Tavistock, Polly O'Loughlin, just missed out on a javelin medal with an excellent fourth place in the under 10 girls' event. Eleanor Mills really took on the opposition in the same competition and came away with a well deserved gold.

Under 10 girl Francesca Moore, making her debut at Sportshall, performed well in all of her events. Despite missing out on a medal she put in an amazing performance in the speed bounce setting a new club record. In the same event for under 10 boys Harry Herdman put in two tremendous rounds and came away with the gold medal and also set a new club record for his efforts.

With 14 medals in total making their way back to Tavistock the club celebrated one of its best performances at the county championships for some years and the five club coaches who travelled with the squad were bursting with pride as their athletes collected their trophies.

Adam Tofield, junior head coach, indisposed and therefore not in Dawlish for the event, congratulated all of the club members who represented Tavistock.

He said: 'Our medal tally is fantastic and reward for all the hard work our young athletes are putting in at training.

'With our new facilities and our growing band of enthusiastic coaches we will continue to go from strength to strength.'
