Tavistock RFC Under 7s

Ivybridge Festival

TAVISTOCK fielded two teams for the annual Ivybridge rugby festival with 20 players enjoying a succession of exciting matches.

The standard of play throughout was high with Tavistock recording 2 wins, 3 defeats (by a single try on each occasion) and a draw against teams from Salcombe, Exeter Saracens, Kingsbridge, Ivybridge, Devonport Services and Plymstock.

Barney Megicks opened Tavistock's account against Kingsbridge with a well taken try and Nick Piper followed it up with strong run to ensure the game against Kingsbridge ended with honours even. Ben Steel celebrated an excellent first try for the club with unbridled joy and further scores from Tom Jackman and Adam Billington peppered the games against Devonport and Ivybridge. Kris Chapman and Nick Piper set up tries with penetrating runs while David Northey and Adam Williams stood out in defence with their excellent and dogged tackling. Christian Hodges and Matthew Billington underlined the promise they had shown earlier in the season with encouraging displays which augur well for next season.

Against Plymstock excellent defensive work from Zak Brinkhurst, Alex Ferguson and Matthew Dobie was the foundation of a 10-0 win.

Marcus Hoddinott scored with a good solo run down the wing and a typically jinking run from Harry Snowden lead to a second try and sealed the victory.

The game against Salcombe provided a yardstick against which the team could measure their progress having been beaten at the beginning of the season by a good Salcombe side.

Good runs from Charlie Carter and Daniel Dobie probed the Salcombe defence, and with never more than one score separating the sides tries from Harry Snowden and Jonnie Massey Tavistock narrowly failed to earn the draw which their performance deserved. Tavistock played their best rugby in the in the game against Exeter Saracens and showed how much they had developed since the start of the season.

There was a maturity in their play with some fluent passing movements and good support.

A fine run by George Carter resulted in a try for Marcus Hoddinott and as Tavistock eased to a 20-10 victory Nick Jory capped a fine display with a try before Harry Snowden and Marcus Hoddinott rounded off the scoring with further tries.

Players of the day were Harry Snowden and Adam Billington.

The next get together for the team is at the club at midday on Sunday 16 May for the end of season presentations and barbecue. Many thanks to all the players and parents for their excellent support this season.
