FOLLOWING a successful taster programme earlier this year, West Devon Sk8 has learned youngsters in West Devon are crazy about skating and has established a permanent club in Tavistock as a result.

West Devon Sk8 Club, set up by Horrabridge couple Karen and Alan Jones and their colleague Sue Grant, who work together at a roller hockey club in Plymouth, held a successful eight-week taster programme in April and have decided to set up a new club as a result of the popularity of the sessions.

Karen said: 'The club started in April this year with an eight-week introduction to skating activity that was very successful. We now have about 16 regular members and this month we have started running two sessions on a Wednesday evening at Tavistock College.

'One group will do skating-related fun and games while the other will concentrate on roller hockey — young people can choose to do whichever they prefer. We welcome girls and boys of all ages and abilities and have skates for those who don't own a pair of their own.'

The club is also considering setting up a ladies' roller hockey team for ladies who used to play the sport and will organise friendly matches against other teams.

West Devon Sk8 Club has received support and funding from West Devon Borough Council and Sport Unlimited, a national programme to try to get 900,000 youngsters involved in community sport.

The club has five coaches, including two current England ladies' roller hockey players, and is aimed at youngsters aged 5 to 16.

The two sessions, already in full swing, take place simultaneously on Wednesdays from 8pm to 9pm at Tavistock College. Anyone who would like to attend the sessions can contact Karen for more information on 07970 544406 or email [email protected]">[email protected]
