OKEHAMPTON and District Tennis Club supported the Millennium Children's games when David Carter and Jackie Jarvis took two tennis teams, as representatives of West Devon Borough Council, to Exeter.
The U12s team enjoyed the hard competitive tennis; while the U14s were beaten in the quarter-finals by Dawlish who went on to win the event.
The juniors from Okehampton completed a busy weekend by travelling to Tipton St John on Sunday to play in a league game which they lost 2-6. Andrew Herrod Taylor and Jonathan Carter won two matches while Scott Rose and Stuart Jarvis were unlucky to lose theirs.
The men's A team travelled to Sidford to play the current league leaders where they gained a 3-1 win. Regular partners Phil Povey and Paul Love together with Jon Allin and Graham Mitchell benefited from the unfortunate injury to one of the Sidford team up to which point they had been enjoying some hard and competitive tennis.
The men's A team were again in action playing Cranford at Exmouth.
The Okehampton team had difficulty adjusting to the speed of the new surface at Cranford and suffered a 4-0 defeat in the damp conditions. Phil Povey and Pal Love lost 2-6, 1-6 and 2-6, 6-3, 2-6 and Graham Mitchell and Jerry Stephens lost 1-6, 0-6 and 3-6, 3-6.
The men's B team played in Exeter at the Country Club losing 4-0. Graham Gale and Alan Holman never really got going on the unfamiliar surface losing 0-6, 1-6 and 0-6, 1-6. The club continued with its policy of encouraging the junior players by partnering junior Scott Rose with Andrew Carter and although they lost 2-6, 3-6 and 3-6, 7-6, 4-6 it was valuable experience for Scott.
The Okehampton Sports week U16s tennis tournament was held on the Simmons Park courts and was organised as a round robin competition with Jonathan Carter defeating Andrew Herrod Taylor 6-1 in the semi finals and going on to beat Colin Marshall in the finals 6-4, 6-4.
The ladies' A team travelled to Budleigh Salterton where they were defeated 4-0. First team stalwarts Angela Herrod Taylor and Lin Atkinson lost 4-6, 3-6 and 3-6, 3-6, never really displaying their usual competitive edge. Second partnership Marcia Jones and Nicola Ferguson lost 3-6, 3-6 and 0-6, 3-6.
