A GROUP of children and their families from Okehampton Primary School took to the streets as part of their mission to obtain Eco School status.

The Big Tidy Up took place last Saturday, when the children took to the streets wearing bright green high visibility tabards, supplied by West Devon Borough Council, to pick up other people's rubbish.

Their aim was to show the rest of the community how litter has become a problem on the streets of Okehampton and to encourage others to start disposing of their own litter properly.

About a third of the items found were recyclable plastic bottles, beer cans and cardboard — a broken toilet was even found!

All of the recyclable rubbish was taken to the recycling centre.
