TWO Tavistock girls have triumphed in the Plymouth Young Chef Challenge. Katie Adams and Sara Lake from Tavistock, together with Rachel Torr from Saltash, who all attend Devonport High School for Girls, were overall winners in the challenge. It was held at Plymouth City College as part of the pupils' Year 10 GCSE food technology course. The students had to produce a three-course meal for two, using only West Country produce, based on crab as a starter, pork for the main course and a dessert based on strawberries. The girls made crab cakes with a home-made sweet chilli sauce, pork wrapped in pancetta and sage with a red wine and cherry sauce, followed by a pudding platter of home-made strawberry ice cream with strawberry coulis, strawberry meringue, chocolate cup filled with strawberries and a strawberry tart. Judged by the Tanner Brothers and Ian Hollaway, the competition was based on taste, presentation, teamwork and the balance of dishes produced. The girls won the opportunity to shadow the chefs at Kitley Hall for a morning and a meal for themselves and their teacher. Devonport High School for Girls gained a silver trophy, a set of knives and pestle and mortar.
