THE heat was on in the kitchen as students contested a young chefs competition held at Okehampton College last week. Eight students took part in the competition sponsored by the Rotary Club. They were each given a budget of £3.50 with which to provide a healthy and well-balanced meal for two people. The results were judged by professional chef Tony Hetherington, with Effings in Exeter, and teacher Sue Cairns. Tony said he was impressed with the dishes the young people served up. ?It was a very good standard. The trade is very affected at the moment because of the way catering isn?t really taught in schools and family life has changed, people don?t even sit down for a roast once a week any more. So any initiative like this which gets young people in the kitchen is good,? he said. He also paid tribute to the well-equipped food technology classrooms at Okehampton College, which he said were among the best he had seen in a school. Rotary Club president Ian Bailey said: ?It was very successful. I was impressed with the standard. ?The students got quite a lot out of it themselves and we are certainly going to be running it again next year.?
