YOUNG musicians from the Okehampton area treated an enthusiastic audience to some sweet sounds at the recent 'Gift of Music' evening organised by Okehampton and District Lions Club.

And players from Okehampton Silver Band were delighted to receive a cheque from the Lions at the end of the evening towards the purchase of a cornet.

The evening attracted a large and appreciative audience for a programme which featured local musical talent aged from 7 to 21 years old, performing music styles ranging from classical to rock.

The 25 young musicians and singers who took part displayed an impressive level of musical ability and demonstrated the depth of talent to be found in the Okehampton area.

The Lions would like to thank local folk group Pennymoor Singers Singaround, who ably supported the evening, and local soprano Nadrah Alshawi for again generously giving her support to the event.

Guest for the evening was Rosie Jarvis, from the Exeter and North Devon branch of the Musicians' Union.

At the end of the evening, held at Fairplace Church, Lions vice-president Mike Chastey thanked the performers for taking part and presented a cheque for £200 to Okehampton Silver Band for the new cornet.

All proceeds from the event will be added to the Lions 'Gift of Music' fund to be used to support young performers in Okehampton and the surrounding areas.

The Lions also thanked members of Fairplace Church for their help.

The Lions 'Gift of Music' evening is intended to become an annual event, so any young musicians who would like to be involved next year should look out for details in the coming months.
