FORD enthusiasts from across the region can share their passion for vintage cars thanks to a new club in Okehampton.
Laura Summerwill and fiancé David Reading, known as Jaff, have set up the True Blue Heritage Club, to celebrate the history and heritage of Ford cars no longer in production.
Run from their home in Okehampton, their frontroom is filled with brand merchandise, membership packs and random car parts that leave no doubt about the passion the couple have for retro Fords.
Launched in February, the club's membership is already in double figures and members have more than 40 Fords between them.
While looking to build up numbers locally, the group has members as far afield as Cheshire, Coventry and Bedfordshire.
The couple have also set up a club website where members can chat and share automotive stories and pictures, or ask questions on the site's technical section.
Laura said: 'Jaff and I decided we wanted to set up a club especially for Fords as it is in our blood. Between us we have driven a lot of Ford's history and will continue to do so. We even met at a Ford show many years ago, so we have a lot to thank the brand for.
'Truth be told, I was a girl whose favourite toys were matchbox cars — later in life, I scolded a boyfriend for buying me flowers rather than car parts. I guess it was my calling to play my part in a car club.
'We are concerned by the rate our automotive heritage is deteriorating. The economy, scrappage scheme, and cost of fuel are all claiming four-wheeled victims which we wish could live on rather than be discarded. Ford has played such a big part in the UK's history that we want to keep it alive. celebrating all Fords which have been.'
The club has already received an endorsement from Ford Racing after communications with the former Ford WRC team, and is hoping to have enough members to give racing a go at events in the future. The club has also attracted companies to become official supporters of their work.
Members attend various car shows locally, showing off their vehicles and talking to the public about Fords.
Laura said: 'Although we are a club first, we are a family second. We welcome all new members, everyone is tolerant and we don't do politics. The club is run to be fun.
'Our no-nonsense attitude means everyone can relax and enjoy their time with us, free of bickering and bullying. At the end of the day it's all about the Fords, preserving the heritage and fun.'
