A TASTY variety of events has been put together in West Devon this month to celebrate National Apple Day.

The programme kicks off this Saturday in Tavistock, when as part of the Dartmoor Days, Dartmoor Ways Festival, Bramley apple expert Celia Steven will give a talk about regeneration of the apple industry in the area.

There will also be a chance to learn about some unusual apple recipes and Nikki Chaplin of the Tamar Valley Market Garden Project will give a talk entitled the Roots of Market Gardening in the Tamar Valley.

The talk will be supported by an exhibition of market gardening and orchards.

The event at The Bedford Hotel will be opened at 10am by Giles Chichester ? entry is free, all are welcome.

On National Apple Day, October 21, children at St Andrew?s School in Buckland Monachorum will take part in an apple pie competition.

During the afternoon, the Tamar Valley Market Gardening Project will be holding a film show about the orchard heritage of the valley in Tavistock Town Hall.

The project?s Vanni Cook said: ?We have organised this event to thank members of the community who have helped to make the project so successful.

?Our last event at Cotehele was a great get-together of market gardeners and growers past and present ? this time it will include all the volunteers.?

Local groups and writers will have publications and prints on sale and Celia Steven will be attending to promote local orchards.

The event is by invitation only ? anyone wishing to attend should call 01822 832469.
