Devon Cricket League Yelverton 1st XI v Shaldon YELVERTON continued their good start to the season with their sixth win in a row as they defeated Shaldon by 6 wickets. Shaldon became the first side in E Division West to deny Yelverton a 20-point maximum, but they still went down by six wickets to the new outright leaders. Skipper Rob Guy won the toss and elected to bowl first on a scorching hot day having seen the already crumbling wicket. This decision looked to have backfired when Shaldon raced to 115-2 with over 20 overs left, thanks to the big hitting of James Fulner. But the re-introduction of Sanjiv Shrivastiv (5-45) turned the game when he bowled Fulner and then knocked over the middle order. Shaldon limped to 146-8 (including 43 extras), being further restricted be a fiery spell from Joel Avery (2-8). Yelverton never looked in any trouble in knocking off the runs, with Geoff Brain (12) and Paul Farnham (79 not out) putting on 71 for the first wicket and Sanjiv Shrivastiv hitting a quick 34, before 3 wickets fell with only a few runs required to win. Yelverton top the E Division West table by five points but play all three teams immediately below them in the next three weeks. Devon Cricket League Yelverton 2nd XI v Stoke Gabriel A LAST wicket partnership of 54 between veteran Jerry Warland and tailender Geraint Heath saved Yelverton?s blushes against visting Stoke Gabriel. Warland, who was carrying a niggling back injury, had only been drafted into the team at a late hour after a last minute unavailability crisis. Of the early order batsmen only Mike Chetwynd with a breezy 38 offered much resistance to the bowling of Samargis (3-46), Gillin (2-36) and Baker (2-24). When Heath walked to the wicket Yelverton were 107-9 and an early tea looked imminant with 16 overs left to bat. Warland and Heath showed more application than some of their earlier colleagues and frustrated the Stoke bowlers for the next hour. Heath brought up the 50 partnership with a six over long-on. The Stoke reply started brightly with Aussie Samargis to the fore, hitting a crisp 24. Skipper Chris Pearson, who celebrated his 40th birthday during the week, introduced himself and was instantly rewarded with a late birthday present as Samargis gave a catch to keeper Chetwynd. Pearson bowling in tandem with Scott McLean (1-21 off 7) slowed the scoring rate to a crawl and went on to take 6-16 in a miserly 10 over spell as Stoke closed on 129-9. Skipper Pearson quipped: ?It was some fine batting by Jerry and Geraint that gave us a reasonable total to defend. They say that life begins at 40, so perhaps this also applies to bowlers!? Moorland Bats Tamar Cricket League Yelverton 3rd XI v Cornwood YELVERTON 3rds recorded back to back league wins, defeating Cornwood by 7 wickets at Crapstone. Cornwood found runs hard to come by and were bowled out for 130. The bowling honours were taken by G.Roderick with 4-37 and Chairman Kevin Mince also chipped in with 3-55 with his medium pace swing bowling. Opener Kenny Sandell led the reply with a well struck 70 not out and was ably supported by skipper Brian Spear (19) as Yelverton won comfortably on 131-3.
