YELVERTON Golf Club held their final round of the Short Course Order of merit this weekend. The order or merit golf tournament is played over six months and is a great way to give juniors an opportunity to play competitive golf before tackling a full size 18 hole course.

With one round to go six juniors were still in with a chance of winning the order of merit trophy, but the title eventually went to seven year old Heath Marker who went around the nine holes in 36 shots despite having a seven on the last hole.

In second place was Kira Penaluna who was closely followed in third place by Eleasha Billing.

Junior coach Steve Dougan said: 'This year's competition had been a great success and it's been great to see the development of all the juniors. Earlier this year we also introduced matches against other clubs, which have been held on the main course and to date we are unbeaten, which shows that the academy course and junior lessons have been a great way to introduce youngsters to the game of golf.

• AS part of a promotion to introduce more ladies to golf, Yelverton Golf Club are running several free ladies group lessons throughout September.

These lessons are designed for beginners, so if you would like to give golf a go or have any friends or family that would like to try, please let them know about this great opportunity. They will be taught the basics, such as grip and stance and all equipment will be provided.

The lessons will last for one hour, will have no more than eight in a group and will be on a first come first serve basis.
