Stoke Gabriel seconds v Yelverton seconds.

YELVERTON seconds slipped to a six wicket defeat at Stoke Gabriel on Saturday.

Skipper Chris Pearson won the toss and deciding to bat. Yelverton's early batting order were unable to capitalise on the conditions and some injudicious shot selection found them on 30-3 with Andy Taylor, Gul Khan and Gerry Keen back in the pavilion.  Terry Leonard was then dismissed by an un-playable delivery from Stoke's N Robinson (3-26) to leave the score on 39-4.  Manu Suresh and Tom Noble, making his debut for the second XI tried to repair the damage, but Suresh fell to the bowling of Robinson, caught behind for 11.  Noble and James Worrell put on 40 for the sixth wicket before Worrell edged behind on 22.  Veteran Chris Cottrell joined Noble and the pair added a further 66 runs for the seventh wicket.  Tight Stoke bowling never allowed the pair to dominate and when the overs ran out the innings closed on 159-6, Noble finishing undefeated on 38 and Cottrell on 33 no.

In reply Stoke lost Steve Tolley early on with the score on 3, bowled by Dom Rushton, but then Higgins and Robinson took the score along steadily before Robinson was adjudged lbw off the bowling of Tony Carter for 16.  Higgins was dropped when he was on 20 this proved to be decisive as Higgins in partnership with J Tolley (16) and Bertram (19 n/o) steadily accumulated runs despite the best efforts of Carter (1-30 off 13).  Despite losing Higgins for 71 stumped by Khan off Taylor (2-24), Stoke had no further alarms as they reached 160-4 with 4 overs to spare.

Stoke Gabriel seconds (18 pts) beat Yelverton seconds (5 pts) by 6 wts.

This week, Yelverton seconds entertain Bideford seconds, 2pm start at Langton Park, Yelverton.
