A DIAMOND jubilee monument created for Queen Victoria more than 100 years ago has been lovingly restored.
The Victorian water trough, located at The Rock, Yelverton, was finished in 1900 and displayed the letters ‘VR’ in gold and the dates 1837-1897, with a fountain close by for ‘man and beast’ which included a brass cup for all to use!
Over the years the monument has taken a hit from the Dartmoor weather and members of Buckland Monachorum Parish Council decided something needed to be done to restore the fountain back to life.
As well as the restoration, it was given an extra engraving to commemorate our reigning Queen, Queen Elizabeth II.
Cllr Susan Woollacott expressed thanks to all sponsors and everyone involved.
‘We have had the lettering of Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee dates restored and added our Queen’s diamond jubilee dates and generally cleaned up the granite monument,’ she said.
‘This was funded by Dartmoor National Park ,Yelverton Rotary Club, Yelverton History Club and Harrowbeer Interest Group.’
Last Tuesday, July 4, members of all groups and the public gathered around to officially re-open the monument.
Afterwards, everyone went to Yelverton Church Hall where they all enjoyed a cup of tea and a sticky bun just like they did back in 1900 on the first day it was opened.
