YELVERTON Golf Club veterans have overcome stiff competition to gain place in the final of the 'Emerton Court' annual golf tournament.

The final was at Churston Golf Club where Mr Emerton Court founded the competition in 1976 to bring together veteran golfers from around the county. This now annual tournament is fought on a home and away basis and Yelverton's fellow Devon opponents were Saunton.

Yelverton's first two pairings were beaten but the team showed its steel by securing matches three and five with convincing wins. The middle order, led by Bryan Blaber, also came back and a par four for both sides down the 18th meant a sudden death play off for the two team's strongest number one pairs. However it was Saunton who came away victorious after what was described as one of the closest and best finals for many years.

n Yelverton Golf Club veterans held their monthly qualifier in poor weather.
